    A poem.
The silhouette of your hand against an awkward glare,
    almost like a door ajar,
    split vein and blood revealed.
    I have to ask.
    I need to know.
Don't you get tired, bleeding that way?
Dancing like a shodow while you fall to the wood, does it take time?
Does it pool natural at your feet?
    At your belly?
    At your arm?
Or did you really just want blots?
Lower your hand if you really want to wipe it away.

Iron Maiden are superior to humans.
Tonight I went to a concert. The concert was Halford, Queensryche and Iron Maiden. Man, was it ever good. Unfortunatly, I missed a bit of Halford's set, but I caught most of it. When I arrived at the gargantuan Shoreline Aphitheater, I was pleased to find my seat was really, really good! Like 9 rows back from the front of the stage. So, I had a fun time watching Rob Halford perform stuff from his new solo album and older Judas Priest material. (Halford : "Breakin' the fucking what??" Crowd : "Law!") They didn't play anything from my beloved 'Painkiller' though. Oh well, they were still good. Next up was Queensryche, who I own nothing by and am not entirely familiar with. Anyway, they performed well enough that I've decided to go on a quest to find 'Operation Mindcrime' used. Their sound was really clean, and the singer, whatever his name is, sounded really good. But who cares? Iron Maiden are going to play! Lights shine on a huge banner hanging at the back of the stage. The banner, of course, has the painting from the cover of 'Brave New World' on it. An opera-esque, Conan The Barbarian type song blasts from the speakers. The song lasts two or three minutes and is immediatly proceeded by the opening guitar line to 'Wicker Man' and all of a sudden the new material sounds amazing! There's an undescribable feeling in the air that no critic of the new material could possibly deny. The band goes into 'The Ghost of the Navigator' which is my personal favorite from the new album. The song ends and Bruce Dickinson politely informs us, "We're gonna play something really old for you now!" Wild cheers from the audience. "I'm just fucking with you. We're gonna play the title track from the new album." And so erupts 'Brave New World', yet another great song from the new album. How did I not realize how great this album really is? Dickinson takes a break between songs to inform the fellow in the third row throwing ice that if he continues to do so then he can meet Dickinson back stage, where Dickinson will proceed to throw his fist down his throat, tear his head off and shit down his neck. Charming. Many cheers from the crowd, including cheers from me. 'Wrathchild' comes next and is wildly recieved, as is 'Two Minutes to Midnight.' The band gets back on new ground with 'Dream of Mirrors' which is a mighty fine tune as well. Other songs are played as well, like 'The Clansman', 'Fear of the Dark', and 'Sign of the Cross'. All the while a huge model wicker man appears at the back of the stage, Dickinson ascends on a cross with angel wings which end up setting on fire, Dickinson waves some union jacks, a huge Eddie wanders around on stage and then they're gone. We have to wait about 10 minutes before a huge banner is lit up to show the cover of 'The Number of the Beast' and the cheers are deafening. The intro to 'The Number of the Beast' commences and people are getting crazy and moving down to the front of the stage despite what the staff would prefer. Many are being kicked out, put in headlocks by large men and dragged up the stairs. Then we get 'Hallowed be thy Name' and the staff can no longer control ANYBODY. Hundreds pressed against the stage, any attempt to move is futile, and it's great! I, Harry Cantwell, am close enough to touch this band! 'Hallowed be thy Name' ends and Dickinson politely asks the staff to stop restraining us and the finale comes and the place goes mad. It was 'Aces High', maybe, at least I think it was, I was trying not to break my legs row of chairs. What a night.

    Life in the ghetto.
Today I went to school and purchased tickets for a Beck show. Why would I go see Beck, you ask, because I want to see Travis too. How unmetal. Oh well. Who cares? Maybe I will be mocked by the black metal elitists. They're funny! Mmmm... Guacamole. I cannot wait for the Iron Maiden concert!

Just what the hell is going on here?
Hey... Just what the hell IS going on here? Well, I don't know, but there's one thing I do know and that is that I'm going to the Renaissance Faire again tomorrow. "Why?" you ask. I'll tell you why, you nosy bastards, because I must maintain my status ship as the might king of the nerds! Extra-nerdy nerd fact : The outfit I wear there isn't even period! It's Viking era! Nerdiness overcomes every pore. School starts on Monday. Is this a good thing? Only time will tell. Time has some other interesting things to tell too... Like about that THING with you and the county sherrif. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about.

2000? How's it shaping up in the metal world?
Let me tell ya, 2000 is not impressing me as far as cd releases go. Sure, Mayhem's 'Grand Decleration of War' is great, Iron Maiden's 'Brave New World' has a few great songs, In Flames' 'Clayman' is mighty rockin', and Steve Von Till's album is incredible, but that's it. Think of all the great albums that came out last year. Where'd all the good albums go? Does anyone else know of anything really good that's come out this year? Huh!?

The best albums of '99? Hell yeah, I know what there. You take me for an idiot?
Out of the 47 cds I own from 1999 I have narrowed it down to the best 20. Here we go... Judge what you buy by this list! If it has not made the list... Do not buy it! The list is all. All is the list! Hail the list!
    20. My Dying Bride 'The Light at the End of the World'. My Dying Bride just loooove to fuck with people, kind of like Ulver do but to a lesser extent. First it's doom, then it's goth, then it's... hell, I don't know what the hell 34% was. Then it's doom again... and is it ever. Mmm.
    19. Einherjer 'Norwegian Native Art'. This may not be what I expected or really wanted but this grew on me. It's no 'Far, Far North'. It's less melodic, more brutal, but when it comes down to it, it's Viking through and through.
    18. Satyricon 'Rebel Extravaganza'. This was a bit overrated in my opinion, but good none the less. It's black metal in the traditional sense, but simultaneously modern. There's trad BM and there's modern BM, but who else blurs the line between the two as well as Satyricon? Me. But that's it.
    17. Opeth 'Still Life'. Raved by many as the best of last year, and another I'd say is a bit overrated. A great, super melodic yet heavy sound, but the album drags a bit. Never the less, the melodies combined with Akerfeldt's vocals are nothing less than haunting.
    16. Children of Bodom 'Hatebreeder'. Melodic power metal with a death metal twist. No one plays the guiatar like Laiho and it's unlikely anyone ever will.
    15. Amorphis 'Tuonela'. An album that took a while to take effect. Amorphis' experimental album... Wait, every Amorphis album is Amorphis' experimental album. Never the less, the abundance of clean singing here is a first for Amorphis as it was used more sparsely in the past.
    14. Nevermore 'Dreaming Neon Black'. The riffs could be straight from a death metal band but there's no doubt that this is power metal, through and through. America created a good metal band? Wow!
    13. Tom Waits 'Mule Variations'. Not metal by a long shot but a great album none the less. It may be a bit too long but the sound on this album is so damned eerie and haunting that I can't help but love it. Sweet Tom Waits. When will he and I be wed?
    12. Tiamat 'Skeleton Skeletron'. I may prefer 'A Deeper Kind of Slumber' as an album but this is more powerful in the way of songs. 'Skeleton Skeletron' is essentially a collection of great goth rock songs. I'm reluctant to use goth rock as a term, because the songs aren't particularly depressing, but they're certainly no where near poppy.
    11. Children of Bodom 'Tokyo Warhearts'. It's a rarity that a band sounds BETTER on a live album than on a studio recording, but here's your prood, beeotch.
    10. Mercyful Fate '9'. Okay, King Diamond's kinda funny. Everyone knows that. But I dare you to find a better selection of heavy metal songs from last year! Time's up. You have failed.
    9. Mr. Bungle 'California'. If I was a gay man I would stalk Mike Patton day and night. I might any way and remove his brain from his skull to enjoy the sweet nectars that make every musical project he's involved in so great.
    8. The Dillinger Escape Plan 'Calculating Infinity'. Music for speed freaks.
    7. Beyond Dawn 'Electric Sulking Machine'. A nice little dreamy, blissed out trip hop pop fest. Poppy yet sad, up beat yet dreary.
    6. Ulver 'Themes from William Blake's "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell"'. I would also stalk Garm if I was a gay man. This man can really do no wrong. Ulver, Borknagar, Arcturus. Good lord. 'Themes...' was a completely unexpected sounding release... but everyone expected that. Trip hop, folk, metal, mixed with Garm's vocals and the stirring texts of Blake. This should be on EVERYONE's '99 list.
    5. The Kovenant 'Animatronic'. I have a theory that the people who think The Kovenant are ripping off Marilyn Manson, either a) have heard about a minute of one Kovenant song, b) have just seen the pictures of The Kovenant, or c) haven't ever heard Marilyn Manson. The Kovenant's 'Animatronic' is the perfect blend of techno and metal. I haven't heard it done better ever in m'long 17 year life.
    4. Dream Theater 'Scenes from a Memory'. Cheesy? Shit yeah, nigga, but great none the less. Unlike most concept albums this not only reads as a story, but SOUNDS like a story. Yeah, reoccuring musical parts and everything. And of course, Dream Theater are about the most talented musiciams you're likely to find.
    3. Katatonia 'Tonight's Decision'. This album be the shit! Fragile vocals complicated but dreary, melancolic guitar harmonies and the mighty drumming of Swano. What makes this album so powerful is hard to pinpoint. I've never really heard anything like it. Suicide put to music.
    2. Anathema 'Judgement'. Making their Pink Floyd worship at least a little more subtle and adding more rock mentality to the song writing. Anathema just can't go wrong. They're one of THOSE bands. It was really hard deciding between Katatonia and Anathema... both albums are kind of similar yet totally different. Lonliness put to music!
    1. Neurosis 'Times of Grace'. How the hell does one describe this thing? The musical equivilent of Neurosis. Eerie as hell, heavier than most, but in the right mindset this album could make the toughest lumberjack shed a tear. It's Neurosis. No other way to describe it. Smoke a lot of weed (and I mean A LOT), lay in the dark and listen to this all the way through. I did that with my friend in Amsterdam. Freakist shit ever.
